Subcribe to the PNVRC bulletin at pnvrc@aol.comPeoples' NonViolent Response Coalition Web Site You are invited to a STRATEGY MEETING, co-sponsored by Alameda County Supervisor Keith Carson, Western States Legal Foundation and many others to develop an alternative vision and peoples' nonviolent response to the current situation: 5:30 - 7:30 PM IN THE RECEPTION ROOM OF THE FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH OF OAKLAND AT 27th and HARRISON Supervisor Keith Carson's Office (510) 272-6695 We join with all Americans and the World as we mourn the losses spawned by last Tuesday's attack. We abhor terrorism and the death and destruction that result, both domestically and internationally. That is why we are alarmed by the Bush Administration's apparent plans for massive military retaliation in response to the tragic attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. Retaliation in the form of more violence and more death will only result in an escalating cycle of violence and death, both here and abroad. We are extremely concerned about legislation already passed by the Congress that will give the President a blank check to respond to acts of terrorism against the United States. This legislation will undermine the constitutional authority of the Congress and give far too broad an authority to the current President and future Presidents. We are dismayed that discussion of an internationally coordinated response under the auspices of international law as opposed to multi-national war is seemingly not on the table. We are deeply troubled by acts of violence and racism by Americans against other Americans of the Islamic faith or with Arab backgrounds. We are extremely concerned about the civil liberties of all Americans which now appear to be threatened. "The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate...Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Martin Luther King, Jr. click here for printable flyer of this announcement (acrobat pdf format)
